CLIENTS

I have provided surveys for a variety of clients over the past five years. Here are some of the recent clients and types of work undertaken.

  • Entec UK Ltd
A close associate of Entec having worked on a significant number of projects from wind farms to the nuclear industry. I’ve undertaken vantage point watches, MBS, CBC, BBS, point count and intertidal surveys as well as more species specific work on nightjar, short-eared owl, red kite and goshawk including nest searches and call broadcasting under licence. Also undertaken power line surveys for nesting raptors.

  • ERM Ltd
Contracted as a seabird surveyor to work on ship-based surveys for offshore wind farms off the North Wales coast on sites such as Gwynt y Mor, Rhyl Flats and post-construction surveys on North Hoyle using the ESAS/COWRIE strip transect methods.

  • ESS Ltd
Part-time staff member of ESS Ecology. Primarily working on onshore bird/mammal surveys for a number of potential wind farm sites across the UK. Using standard ornithological methodology to assess impact. Also undertaken otter, badger and water vole surveys as well as brown hairstreak surveys and white-faced darter work in the Midlands. Also continued offshore seabird surveys on the trio of North Wales wind farm sites.

  • West Coast Energy Ltd
Great-crested newt surveys were carried out for WCE Nr Carsington Water in Derbyshire. A number of ponds were surveyed and were found to have small populations of gcn. Habitat Suitability Indexes (HSI) were also carried out.

  • Ecotech
Assisting with some great-crested newt surveys nr Welshpool, Mid-Wales.

  • Network Rail
Work carried out on small sites using phase one (NCC 1990) methods. This is done to assess impact of works such as track replacement and station refurbishment etc. Also undertaken protected species work and ensure all legal obligations are fully met and understood.

  • First Engineering Ltd
Work carried out including phase one habitat surveys, protected species surveys and bird surveys.

  • Travis Baker Associates
Commissioned to carry out a great crested newt survey for a pipeline development in Stoke on Trent. It was assessed that no formal survey was needed and also no licence due to distance from a pool complex and a known great crested newt population. This was agreed with the County Ecologist. The work proceeded with no impact on the population of newts.

  • Michael Gavaghan Wildlife Consultancy
Having started to work for Mike in 2006 on a rail site on the Wirral I’ve undertaken many phase one and protected species surveys for small developments from Marazion in Cornwall to Dundee in Scotland. I also write the reports and Ecological Impact Assessments.

  • JNCC
I sit on the panel of aerial surveyors under a framework agreement and also as a seabird surveyor.

  • Baker, Shepherd & Gillespie
Sub-contracted as an ornithologist to work on some small potential terrestrial wind farm sites across the midlands using vantage point and CBC methodology. Also undertaken bat detector and driven bat transects on some sites as well as great crested newt surveys over the last two years.

  • ECON
Having met Dr Martin Perrow on a bird watching trip to Morocco in 2008, I began working as a sub-contractor with ECON on a number of their offshore sites as a seabird surveyor and continue to assist on surveys over 2010

  • Cork Ecology/BERR
I spent a two week survey on the Dogger Bank in September 2008 undertaking seabird and sea mammal surveys for Colin Barton of Cork Ecology. Again we worked to the ESAS/COWRIE strip transect method.

  • PMSS/Marine Current Turbines
Sub-contracted to undertake seabird and sea mammal surveys from land overlooking two potential tidal array schemes off the North Wales coast to assess impact on foraging birds from nearby breeding colonies. I designed and implemented the methodologies through the summer and now through the winter period.

  • RPS
Undertook wintering seabird and sea mammal surveys for a potential tidal scheme off the West Wales coast through the winter of 2009/10.

  • Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies, University of Hull
I have worked closely with IECS on a number of offshore wind sites as seabird and sea mammal surveyor. Currently assisting them on with some of their Scottish Territorial wind sites of the West and Northeast coasts. Also I’m carrying out post-construction surveys with them on the Rhyl Flats Round 2 site.

  • EMU
Currently sub-contracting as a seabird and marine mammal surveyor for a large Round Three site.
